Having survived the "hunger games" style battle to lead Australia's biggest police force, Mal Lanyon faces more political and policing minefields as he becomes the face of NSW Police.

Former detective sergeant-turned-NSW parliamentarian Rod Roberts, who championed Mr Lanyon for the role, said he was the right man to lead the force after Karen Webb's scandal-ridden tenure.
