When news reached the West of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati's passing at the age of 47, the international community naturally focused on her formal titles. They spoke of the brilliant royal prosecutor, the diplomat, and the visionary behind the United Nations "Bangkok Rules" for the treatment of female inmates. But 15 years ago, before those rules reshaped international human rights law, I had the immense privilege of witnessing her vision functioning on the ground floor. I saw it from inside the "prison proper" of the Thonburi Ladies Remand Center.
As an Irish expat and a psychology graduate navigating a major midlife reinvention in Bangkok, I was teaching science to young girls at Saint Joseph Convent School on Silom Road. Rooted heavily in a culture of charity and community service, the school graciously accommodated my schedule, allowing me to take on a concurrent 50-hour volunteer contract through the New Cambridge Institute. My mission was to teach conversational English inside the Thonburi Ladies Remand Center. I quickly realised that traditional, over-polite textbooks were useless for women trying to survive. Instead, we tossed the curriculum aside and acted out real-world scenarios: opening doors, taking orders, and serving tables. In Thailand's massive tourism economy, conversational English was not just a lesson; it was a psychological lifeline out of what Viktor Frankl called the "existential vacuum" of prison boredom.
