Ryan Reynolds' new family comedy, 'IF,' about imaginary friends, made its debut in theaters over the weekend, opening with an estimated $35 million in domestic ticket sales. Despite falling short of its projected $40 million opening, the PG-rated live-action and animated hybrid managed to draw audiences into theaters across 4,041 locations.
The film, directed by John Krasinski, features a storyline where a widowed father, played by Krasinski himself, sends his daughter to live with her grandmother while he undergoes a heart operation. The daughter, Bea, encounters Cal, played by Reynolds, who takes care of forgotten imaginary friends.
IF boasts a star-studded voice cast, including George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bradley Cooper, Emily Blunt, and the late Louis Gossett Jr. The film had a production budget of $110 million before prints and advertising.

In the box office rankings, 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' held the top spot with $58.5 million in ticket sales, followed by 'The Strangers - Chapter 1' at No. 3 with $12 million. 'The Fall Guy' and 'Back to Black' secured the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
'The Fall Guy' earned $8.4 million in its latest weekend, while 'Back to Black' opened with $2.8 million domestically but has seen success internationally with $37 million in ticket sales.
