A comet can spend most of its existence as a dark, frozen body traveling through the outer Solar System. Then, as it approaches the Sun, something spectacular happens: a glowing coma forms around its nucleus and enormous tails can stretch millions of kilometers into space.
This transformation is not mysterious. Science says sunlight provides the energy that activates a comet, while solar radiation pressure and the solar wind push the released material away from the Sun.
