The Department of Land Transport (DLT) has relaxed registration rules for motorcycle sidecars, allowing them to be formally registered under revised guidelines for "community economy vehicles to improve safety and support community livelihoods".
DLT spokesman Titipat Thaijongrak said the aim was to support grassroots transport vehicles.
Under the rules, sidecars must be fitted on the left side, securely attached, and designed to avoid obstructing visibility or affecting stability.
Safety requirements include effective braking systems, secure mounting, lighting and reflective devices for night-time visibility.
Registered vehicles will be classified as motorcycle type RY.12, with an annual tax of 150 baht.
Owners are urged to submit vehicles for inspection and registration immediately, he said.
