Reports of sexual harassment on the railways have risen by 175% since before the pandemic.
The increase is partly explained by people becoming more confident in reporting such behaviour, and now British Transport Police (BTP) has launched a campaign to report incidents or safely intervene where they can. The "Speak Up, Interrupt" initiative aims to empower bystanders and witnesses of all forms of inappropriate sexual behaviour on the network, while officers boost specialist patrols and target hotspot locations.
The kinds of behaviour defined as inappropriate include leering, catcalling, touching, pressing, upskirting, or indecent exposure.
