Melbourne are set to lose vice-captain Jack Viney for nearly half of the AFL season, forcing a "raffle" for midfield spots under new coach Steven King.

Viney will undergo achilles surgery on Tuesday, with Demons captain Max Gawn saying the midfielder is not expected to feature in the first three months of the campaign.
