The dust settled in the church in the way dust settles in the desert — drifting down endlessly, layering the floors, pews and wooden inscriptions along the walls and sanctuary. A light May rain, which came in chilled bursts, lifted and pushed the desert grit only slightly through the open church door. Then it all settled again, as if nothing had changed.
