At a "high-level United Nations consultative conference" in Ghana earlier this month, African and Caribbean countries called on the countries that benefited from the transatlantic slave trade to make a formal apology and pay reparations to the descendants of the enslaved millions (or at least to the countries that the victims had come from).
The meeting followed up on the UN General Assembly's resolution declaring transatlantic slavery "the gravest crime against humanity" and urging member states to contribute to a reparations fund.
In all, 123 countries voted for it, and only three voted against: the United States, Israel and Argentina.
