Vanderbilt's Mikayla Blakes made history on Sunday by scoring a remarkable 55 points in a thrilling overtime victory against Auburn, setting a new Division I women's freshman record. The 5-foot-8 guard, who has been averaging 21.8 points per game, displayed exceptional skill and accuracy throughout the match. Blakes shot an impressive 15 for 28 from the field, including two successful 3-pointers, and showcased her prowess at the free-throw line by making an outstanding 23 of 24 attempts.
Blakes' remarkable performance surpassed the previous record held by Elena Delle Donne, who scored 54 points as a redshirt freshman at Delaware in 2010. While Blakes' 55-point achievement is a freshman record, the overall NCAA Division I record for points in a game is held by Ayoka Lee of Kansas State, who scored 61 points in 2022.
