Searches for “dark patterns” saw a huge spike last week, as thousands seek to learn more about the online trend catching shoppers off guard.
Dark patterns refer to techniques used by some retailers or services online to manipulate customers into making a decision, which can often be very difficult to undo. Some of the most common dark patterns include roping customers into a subscription that is then almost impossible to get out of, or pressure selling to customers.
New research from ULaw now reveals millions are at risk of being caught out, as more than two thirds of people (68%) either don’t read or don’t understand contracts they sign for subscriptions or utilities.
