HISTORICAL FACTS: When renting in retirement makes more sense than owning - Caught on Camera

When Renting in Retirement Makes More Sense Than Owning
A paid-off home can still carry substantial taxes, insurance, maintenance, and repair costs. For some retirees, renting offers more flexibility and fewer property responsibilities, but future rent increases deserve careful planning – Shutterstock

Renting in retirement can make more financial sense than owning a home, even for people who have spent decades paying down a mortgage. The surprising part? A paid-off house can still put considerable pressure on a retirement budget, especially when repairs, property taxes, insurance, and maintenance compete with everyday expenses.

Homeownership offers stability and the satisfaction of having a place to call your own. But retirement changes the calculation. A roof replacement can consume money meant for travel, while a sprawling house may require more cleaning, upkeep, and yardwork than anyone wants to manage at 72. Renting doesn’t automatically save money, but it can turn unpredictable housing expenses into a more manageable monthly commitment. For some retirees, that trade makes owning a home less attractive than it once seemed.
