The departure of Marcus Smart for the Memphis Grizzlies in the deal that brought back Kristaps Porzingis from the Washington Wizards feels like a significant change in Boston Celtics team culture and fan loyalty.
Fans expressed strong emotional reactions and attachment to Smart on social media after news broke. His importance transcended statistics and created a genuine love for him among fans of the storied franchise. Now, fans of the team need to adjust to life without the Flower Mound native playing on their favorite team — and to having the Latvian center there in his place.
