The internet has not been kind to Margot Robbie this week. The 35-year-old star of Barbie and Wuthering Heights debuted a new bob at the Chanel show on Monday. And depending on who you ask, she’s either rocking “the hairstyle of the season”, a “dramatic” new cut, or is completely “unrecognisable.”
Robbie’s audacity to cut her hair has landed her in the rare camp of actresses who are slated for getting a bob. It might not take the form of direct criticism, but it’s immediately obvious when a bob is badly received. Take Sydney Sweeney, for example, who cut her long blonde locks last winter and was immediately accused of wearing “the stiffest wig this side of the Mississippi.” Sweeney’s hairstylist Glen Oropeza came to the defence of her new “Republican look” (as it was dubbed on social media), writing on Instagram: “Wasn't a wig but you can't get my girl's name out of your mouth.”
