The Xbox Game Studio list of developers has seen some big changes in 2026, with the news that Microsoft is cutting 3,200 employees in a major restructure.
An Xbox Wire post detailing the Xbox Reset memo from CEO Asha Sharma confirmed that certain studios under the Xbox Game Studios umbrella are parting ways, with the likes of Psychonauts and Keeper developer Double Fine and South of Midnight Studio Compulsion Games set to be go independent. Elsewhere, Hellblade developer Ninja Theory (which recently revealed new game, Senua) and State of Decay 3's Undead Labs have "entered terms" to go under new ownership, but we've yet to get confirmation on the respective moves for each studio.
This comes after we saw mass layoffs impacting various teams that fall under the Xbox umbrella last year. The reports also came with the news of cancellation of projects, such as Rare's fantasy adventure Everwild. The Initiative studio, which was formed in 2020, was also shut down with the cancelation of its Perfect Dark reboot. For a recap, you can find a breakdown of the Xbox Game Studios list as it currently stands, with details on the upcoming Xbox Series games in the works and some more details on impacted studios.
