A youth detention centre where a small "dangerous" group of detainees climbed onto the roof and armed themselves during a 17-hour stand-off with authorities has vastly improved in recent years, a government minister says.

The incident ended on Tuesday when the last of the six youths, aged between 12 and 17, came down from the Banksia Hill Detention Centre in Perth's south.
