Inviting strangers into your home over a shared hobby can go one of two ways. Best case? You make some new friends, roll some ridiculous nat 1s, and laugh about it for weeks afterwards. Worst case? Someone tries to sneak off with your manga. In their pants.

One DnD fan turned to an online community to vent after hosting a one-shot with players from a local group, only for one of them to go from “slightly too interested” in the bookshelf to literal “pants thief.” And, somehow, it just kept getting worse.

After his regular crew bailed, one DnD fan invited three strangers to a casual one-shot, expecting nothing crazier than bad dice

One of the gaming guests, though, homed straight in on a specific manga volume, which later suspiciously vanished from the bookshelf

Soon enough, the missing book was discovered tucked down the guy’s pants, who then tried to act like nothing had happened

Even after getting caught again, he still left the horrified host reeling with an ask so absurd he just had to tell netizens about it

The original poster (OP) says the whole thing started innocently enough. His regular DnD group was unavailable, but he still wanted a fun weekend plan, and a local gaming group helped him fill the table. Three strangers showed up, including one younger guy who, in hindsight, seemed to arrive with way more than dice on his mind.

At first, the guy, dubbed “B,” mostly came off as your classic anime-and-manga superfan. Nothing too unusual there. However, the second he stepped into OP’s room, he locked onto the bookshelf like it owed him rent, immediately asking about a specific Berserk variant cover he claimed he’d never been unable to track down.

Well, the one-shot itself actually went great. Everyone had fun, the table chemistry worked, and B even turned out to be a solid player. Once the others left, though, OP noticed that the same Berserk volume had vanished, only to find it literally tucked halfway down the still yapping B’s pants.

After telling him to get lost, OP turned around just long enough for the nerd to try sneaking a figurine into his backpack too. Dragged to the door, he seemed ready to ‘fess up, but then… he actually asked whether OP was hosting another session. Needless to say, the host was left stumped but just had to share his story online.

Look, there are plenty of ways to be that guy at game night. Casually smuggling manga in your jeans while still trying to keep the small talk going, though? That kind of chaos moves past bad etiquette and straight into fascinatingly weird human behavior.

Behavior experts often talk about how some people respond to confrontation by acting as if reality hasn’t, in fact, changed. Instead of acknowledging what just happened, they double down on “business as usual.” In B’s case, that meant chatting away like he hadn’t just been caught with someone else’s book halfway to Narnia.

The theft itself feels less about value and more about impulse; the manga wasn’t impossibly rare or wildly expensive, and the figurine wasn’t exactly life-changing either. Sometimes the urge to take something isn’t driven by logic at all, but by opportunity, thrill, or just staggeringly poor judgment.

There’s also the trust dynamic unique to hobby spaces. Tabletop gaming thrives on instant rapport, shared imagination, and the assumption that strangers invited into your home will respect both your rules and your belongings. You don’t expect to actually have to spell it out.

What really makes OP’s story linger is the perfect storm of denial, impulse, and shattered trust colliding in one living room. B exploited hobby-space goodwill, got busted mid-smuggle, and just kept… chatting? It’s not the theft that’s wild, it’s his complete refusal to let reality interrupt the vibe.

Some bad guests overstay their welcome. Others spill drinks on your sofa. Only a brazen few (or perhaps only B?) will literally try to loot the bookshelf on their way out. If nothing else, OP now has the kind of tabletop horror story that’ll absolutely crush at future game nights.

Be honest: would you have stayed calm after catching B the first time, or would the second grab have sent you into full blown dragon-mode? Drop your thoughts in the comments.
