Unless you're Italian, then "pasta" just means noodles. This is how language works: you use a word in your native language to signify a certain general type of food, then adopt a word from the country where a specific regional variation originated to mean this specific variation. For instance: In polish, pierogi just means dumplings. Bao, gyoza, ravioli, wonton, khinkali - they're all pierogi in polish, but in English, Pierogi just means polish dumplings. The same is true for all sorts of common food types like noodles, stews, puddings or meat skewers.
