A murder charge has been laid after the body of a missing man was found on the outskirts of a small mining town in Western Australia.

The remains of Raymond Smith, 68, were discovered on Friday.

He was last seen alive on December 7 in Greenbushes, 245km south of Perth, and was reported missing on December 18.

On Sunday, homicide squad detectives charged a 35-year-old man from nearby Bridgetown.

He was to appear in a Bunbury court on Sunday.

Greenbushes' mining operations produce tantalite, lithium, tin and kaolin.

The town has a population of about 360.
