If there’s an unnecessary trinket to be bought, rest assured I will be buying it. Silver spoons and ring holders; minaudières and photo-lockets; jewelled vaporisers and Art deco lipstick holders; all of the above can be found — though often not when needed — somewhere in the vicinity of my vanity. (Piece of furniture, not personal trait.) Imagine my delight when I learned there was another bejewelled little tchotchke I could spend (waste) money on? My heart leapt.
I first spotted an ornamental lighter case on jewellery brand Mejuri’s website, in that ominous late December holiday shopping haze. It was sleek and elegant, ribbed with a gold exterior — almost architectural. It was delightful, beautiful and entirely non-essential. It did not meet any requirements for gift-giving. I had to have it.
