Spain releases wild horses into Iberian Highlands after 10,000 years to help prevent wildfires

Przewalski's horses roam Spain's Iberian Highlands after a long absence. Their grazing naturally reshapes landscapes vulnerable to wildfires and forest fires. This rewilding effort restores ecological roles lost to extensive livestock farming. The horses improve pasture quality and support biodiversity while reducing combustible vegetation. Their return also boosts nature tourism,…

In 2001, scientists began adding tiny amounts of synthetic estrogen to an Ontario lake; within the next two years, its fathead minnow population collapsed

A seven-year whole-lake experiment in northwestern Ontario examined how chronic exposure to the synthetic estrogen 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) affected fathead minnows. Scientists added small amounts of EE2 to Lake 260 during three open-water seasons beginning in 2001. The exposure increased vitellogenin responses, affected gonadal development, and produced reproductive changes in both…

Buffel Grass Fuels Intense Fires: historic plantings reshape deserts; authorities race to contain spread

Buffel grass, an invasive species brought to Australia over a hundred years ago, significantly heightens the risk of devastating wildfires in its arid landscapes. In Tjoritja/West MacDonnell National Park, a massive fire in 2023 scorched more than 100,000 hectares, fueled by dense buffel grass, which exacerbated the intensity of the…

Plantations Cut Streamflow: South Africa’s exotic trees slashed water; controls followed in key catchments

South Africa's commercial tree plantation efforts began in the 1930s to achieve timber self-sufficiency, but they inadvertently caused significant declines in water flow within mountain catchments. Studies revealed alarming drops in streamflow, ranging from 55% to 82% in various locales. The introduction of fast-growing exotic trees exacerbated water usage compared…

Real-Time Lizard Evolution: 10 become 5,000 on Pod Mrcaru; heads and guts rapidly adapt

In 1971, Italian wall lizards were introduced to Pod Mrcaru island, where they flourished and underwent impressive evolutionary changes over the next thirty-three years. Their bite strength increased, skull sizes enlarged, and digestive adaptations allowed them to handle more plant matter efficiently. This notable case offers a compelling demonstration of…

Rabbit Release Reshapes Island: One doe transforms Porto Santo ecology; Darwin reading upended

In 1419, Portuguese explorers brought rabbits to Porto Santo island, leading to their rapid population growth and serious harm to local forests. Darwin later noted them as an example of evolution, but subsequent studies revealed them as a natural subspecies, which lessened their importance in the discourse on evolutionary change.

Rabbits Reshape Island Ecosystem: Sediment DNA tracks 600 years of change; plateau in new equilibrium

In 1874, rabbits were introduced to Kerguelen, leading to severe damage to the unique coastal vegetation. As these invasive creatures proliferated, they also affected the island's central plateau, disrupting its delicate ecosystem. Analyzing lake sediment DNA showed a notable decline in plant variety and a surge in soil erosion following…

Invasive Bees Reshape Patagonia: European species oust native; parasite spreads

The introduction of a non-native bumblebee species has caused significant disruptions in the pollinator ecosystem of southern South America. This invasive species has not only outcompeted the local Bombus dahlbomii but has also introduced harmful diseases, pushing the native bumblebee towards potential extinction. Additionally, commercial bees have brought with them…

New Jersey sank 397 obsolete army tanks and armored vehicles from 1994 to 1997 in 40 to 140 feet of water; a five-year study found 432,000 animals of 145 species per square metre of reef habitat

In a remarkable initiative, obsolete US Army tanks were intentionally submerged off the New Jersey coast, creating vibrant artificial reefs that now host an impressive 432,000 marine creatures. This innovative project not only repurposes military surplus but also highlights the potential for such efforts to enhance aquatic ecosystems, emphasizing the…
